Viikko sitten kirjoitin sappea suoltavan artikkelin Savatagen legendaarisen Streets -albumin uudelleenjulkaisun äänenlaadusta. Siitä puuttuu diskantti lähes täysin, positiivisena puolena bassossa on suhteellisen ok, ja jotkut vähäeleisemmät biisit kuulostavat ihan hyvältä. Mutta biisit joissa on enemmän toimintaa, eivät minua tyydytä, varsinkaan kun vertaa alkuperäiseen vinyyliin tai striimauspalveluiden äänenlaatuun.

Homma otti minua päähän jopa niin paljon, että päätin kirjoittaa sähköpostia vinyylin masteroineelle Thorsten Wyk’lle. Kerroin hänelle mielipiteeni äänenlaadusta, ja ihmettelin miten uudelleenjulkaisu poikkeaa täysin alkuperäisestä vinyylistä, sekä striimauspalveluiden tuottamasta soundista.

Thorsten osoittautui itseasiassa varsinaiseksi herrasmieheksi ja old school -tekijäksi, jolla on oma vahva näkemys asioista. Hän kertoi tehneensä vinyylistä saman kuuloisen kuin mitä hänelle toimitetut alkuperäiset masterit olivat. Ja ne olivat nimenomaan täysin originaalit. Thorsten meni jopa niin pitkälle, että lähetti minulle yhden master-tiedoston wav-muodosta jotta pääsin vertaamaan sitä uusintavinyyliin.

Ja, lopputulos oli hyvinkin samanlainen. Streetsin uusi vinyyliversio kuulostaa juurikin siltä millä se alkuperäisellä masternauhallakin kuulostaa, sille ei vain voi mitään että itse en pidä sen soundista. Eli Thorsten teki sen mitä häneltä pyydettiin. On mielestäni aivan mahtavaa, että mies on niin omistautunut työlleen että alkaa kirjeenvaihtoon jonkun kaltaiseni random-tyypin kanssa, ja vielä lähettää master-tiedoston vertailua varten.

Thorstenin luvalla laitan tähän alle hänen näkemyksiään levyjen masteroinnista, äänenlaadusta ym. asioista joita käsittelime. Nyt voin rinta rottingilla sanoa, että tällaista sisältöä ei ihan joka mediasta löydy. En lähde kääntämään tekstiä englannista suomeksi, jottei tekstin ajatus ja sisältö kärsi.

Which original vinyl do you have?

I have made a mastering of original dates before 1991.

It’s not about a copy from 1991 release or 2014 pressing.

It should show the original music from the end of 1980s.  The dynamics of the original bass and treble. No additional compression / limiting.
I can not confirm your description of the sound.

If your vinyl sounds bad, it can have many causes. I do not want to write all the possibilities, since you should have enough experience when test turntables etc.

I send you a part of track 1, which was used for cutting. Please note, there is no final-limiter, it is not needed for vinyl cutting.  So please, when comparing, listen with the same volume.

I’m glad to hear that the sample sounds the same as the record. That means the cut is ok and also your equipment is perfect.

I can understand that when comparing your 1991 record and the new vinyl, they sound very different. I also quickly reloaded a sream from the 1991 record.
Oh yes, there was a lot of treble and much more stereo width in the highs. But much less dynamics in return. (It is a rock opera, there must be dynamics) The bass has fallen victim to the limiter.
My original master is really not equal to the 1991 master.
This is clearly audible.

I tried to get the original recording which has little treble. It is recognizable, for example, in the voice. This one has enough treble, if not a little too much ”S”.  If I had added more treble, which is not a technical problem, the voice and the natural space would change to an artificial space, like on the 1991 vinyl.

I know, today people generally work with more treble than in 1991.
Since I’m a bit older, I know the time and depending on the country or region in the 90s, when mastering, I added different heights.
For example Spain, always much more treble, because the listening habit by the musical history is another, as for example in England (there rather little treble). There is for example ”Cobalt 60” there I did it so.

Today there is no longer this difference. The listening habits have changed extremely.
But with ”Streeds” I have consciously renounced it.

Yes, that is a matter of taste but also a matter of head. Once I have heard music with a lot of treble, then comes music with less treble, the head is still used to a lot of treble and can not switch. The same applies to dynamics.  If I have a lot of dynamics, it sounds thinner than processed with compressor and limiter. Only by equalizing the volume levels can the ear be tricked. Then the music with dynamics is clearly superior, that is also important. Music with natural dynamics is heard much longer before it is turned off, because it is natural and not artificial.
When the volume is increased, it seems that the music always sounds ”better”.
That’s how man is 😉

Musical taste is different and sometimes there is a story.
In this case I tried to give the original story of the recording.  An opera combined with rock.

A recording from another time. A time which I know as a young mastering engineer.  And yes, there were also some numbers with extremely highs and a lot of stereo. But this original recording is not one of them.

We didn’t want a copy of the vinyl from 1991, we already re-cut it in 2014.

By the way, everything that is mastered in our house is still analog, like the beloved vinyl record.

I took the time to write this to you so that you understand why the new vinyl is the way it is.  I would like that especially the vinyl lovers like you are, once an impression of a history of a piece of music get. This makes the music even more valuable.
By the way, we have received a lot of very positive feedback. You see, it is always a matter of taste. The world is colorful, even if the current time has just lost something in it.
